
There are many different programs and classes for aerobics out there. From dance oriented, to step, to kickboxing, and boot camps, these all have there place in the fitness world. My issue with these classes is that not much is being done to increase lean body mass. Lets take a deeper look into group aerobics.
1 Some would have you believe that Aerobic exercise is all you need to control your weight. This is simply not true. Studies indicate that Aerobics and calorie restricted diets do little if anything to preserve lean body mass during weight reduction efforts. As your lean body mass decreases with such a workout regimen, so will your metabolic rate.
2 This means that you are likely to gain back all or most of the weight you worked so hard to get rid of. So it stands to reason that if you work with a program designed to increase lean body mass and reduce body fat, you will be able to continue sound weight management.
3 The more lean body mass you have the more calories you are able to burn.
4 This leads me into my next issue. The belief that your resting metabolic rate will remain elevated long after your aerobic workout. Yes it will actually be elevated! You will burn about 15 more calories and hour for every 100 you burned while doing the aerobics. I burn 15 calories going to get the newspaper.
5 Low intensity Aerobics burns more fat than high intensity. This is also true. Your body tends to use fats rather than carbs as fuel during low intensity aerobics. However, just because carbs are spared during this type of workout and fat is more readily burned does not mean you will see better results.
6 Two things people that believe this ignore are. First the amount of total fat calories burned in high intensity workouts is equal to if not more than the amount of fat at low intensity even though the low intensity has a higher percentage of the calories from fat. Second is when you eat again you will replenish the carbs you burned and the extra will be converted to fat. So if you didn’t burn any carbs you will just store all that you eat next meal.
7 This sounds confusing but simply means your fat stores will be virtually unchanged. The fact of the matter is that you loose weight when you burn more calories than you take in. Now refer back to number 1. and you can see that the key is maintaining and increasing lean body mass.
8 I would venture to say that the only benefit of a low intensity aerobic exercise without steadily increasing resistance training, would be for those who cannot physically do what will actually help them. Reasons for this may be orthopedic or other medical conditions.
